How OCD Symptoms can be Managed?

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is one of the most common existing anxiety disorders, better known as OCD.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, mind-set, ideas, sensations or behaviors that make them feel to do something. Because of the different symptoms of OCD there are many effective treatments for OCD, ranging from therapy to self-help and medication. Here are the different techniques and therapies given to OCD patients.

Psychotherapy treatment is considered as the first-line solution for OCD parti­cularly for children. It is also known as Exposure and Responsive Prevention or ERP. Psychotherapy covers the coaching of means through neutralizing activities in order to handle with obsessive thought without the need to resort to the OCD tendency or just to lessen the symptoms if possible.

Psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is proven to be successful and considered to be highly effective as it is pays attention on changing thought pattern to alter the obsessive and compulsive manners itself. CBT is suited for all patients.  It is the best way to permanently reduce OCD symptoms.  It includes the relationship of obsession and compulsion to their situation. It also involves the symptoms experienced by the patient that are evaluated and rationalized by the specialist.

Another available treatment is the Relaxation Technique. This type of treatment is also known as cognitive technique. It includes procedures for rest such as self-talk to ease existing symptoms. There are techniques that facilitate the patient to confer interpersonal situations. It also promotes self-assurance.

Another way to manage OCD symptoms is the Antidepressant Medication.

There are two accessible types of drugs that can treat OCD. First is Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), like fluoxetine (Prozac®) and sertraline (Zoloft®). They are a category of compounds naturally used as antidepressants in the management of depressionanxiety disorders. Second is Tri-cyclic Antidepressant (TCA), clomipramine (Anafranil®). It is a heterocyclic chemical compounds used first and foremost as antidepressants. It also influences serotonin levels.

Next is the Family Therapy. Family is considered to be the primary unit of society which can affect and shape an individual. Family therapy is beneficial in providing way out to OCD. It begins with in the family. Their lifestyle and the supportive environment, caressed with love help the condition of the patient. It can help give solution to family conflicts by encouraging the right consideration about such disorder, which can motivate family members to help the OCD patient.

Lastly is Psychosurgery. It is being performed in sensitive cases of OCD. It is also known as neurosurgery. This is done when the signs and symptoms of the OCD are now overpowering and are unresponsive to other treatments available. It involves cutting certain components of the brain using an electrode. It improves one’s motor power, thus the patient’s anterior lobe is under the process of operation. The procedure involves Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to make definite that only preferred brain part is drawn in during the surgery. Considerably, more than 30% of patients who had undergone psychosurgery displayed great improvements in their OCD unlike the Lobotomy Procedure which generates unexpected brain injury and memory failure.

Regarding medications for OCD, it is important that they are first consulted and prescribed by the physician before taking.
