How to manage OCD at home?

Being responsible of one’s self and taking good care of it are important factors in managing the obsessions and compulsions of an OCD patient. This proper and responsible management of the OCD involve the right attitude in taking medications and treatments to lessen the indicators of obsession and compulsion, a healthy and balanced lifestyle and observing fitness physically so as with maintaining good mental ability. ERP or Exposure and Response Prevention is common among other treatments that may be done at home. By means of ERP, an OCD patient is exposed on his symptoms like frequent hand washing having the fear of contamination and recurring unwanted thoughts.

Home treatment and Exposure and Response Prevention will be made possible with the support and assistance of every family member of the OCD patient including an atmosphere full of love. A doctor will always recommend keeping a good communication between the OCD patient and his family members, friends and other persons closely related to him that may help him with his condition. Home treatment of the OCD entails a good relationship between the patient and his environment.

Stress has been considered an essential factor of why and on how OCD rise and affect the patients’ normal living.

Reducing and avoiding situations that may cause stress, though may not totally cure Obsessions and Compulsions in OCD but can at least prevent, lessen or ease the existing symptoms. Doctors recommend different tips that can help the OCD case of the patient: taking slow and deep breaths, soaking in a warm bath, listening to pleasant music, taking a walk or doing an exercise, enrolling in a yoga class, having a massage and or drinking warm, nonalcoholic and noncaffeinated beverages.

Drinking of warm, nonalcoholic and noncaffeinated beverages is further elaborated for it greatly affects the OCD patient’s health condition that is directly associated to his compulsions and obsessions symptoms. Avoiding or limiting of caffeine helps. Coffee, soda pop and other chocolate containing caffeine can give rise to stressful scenarios. Not avoiding such can result to severe headaches that may lose the patient’s focus on his therapies and medications. If drinking of alcoholic beverages cannot be avoided, it is better to have it in a moderate amount. OCD patients usually find themselves in a stressful situations and resort to have an alcoholic drink; it must be properly observed and limited to two bottles for males and just a bottle for females. Be aware to take proper precautions.
